The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) was declared by the United Nations on May 22 to raise public awareness of biodiversity issues. The date 29 December (the date of the entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity) was originally designated as The International Day for Biological Diversity when it was first created by the UN General Assembly's Second Committee in late 1993. On 22 May 1992, the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nairobi, Kenya, passed its final act, which established 22 May as International Day of Biodiversity (IDB). As a result of the large number of holidays that fall on the same weekend as December 29th, many countries found it difficult to organize meaningful celebrations around that date.
